Boulder County wants to spend a lot of money on special projects while we still don't have adequate base service in Boulder County. The road widening funds hidden in the BRT projects would be enough to fund adequate transit in Longmont and to improve service between Lafayette and surrounding communities, including better salaries for bus drivers. In fact, providing adequate service in our neighborhoods would make it easier to find the bus drivers we need to provide that service.

The City of Boulder, Boulder County, and CU Boulder are hosting a Transportation Master Plan Event
Connecting People and Places
Millennium Harvest House Boulder
1345 28th Street
Boulder
Bus: AB2 (Make sure that this bus doesn't charge the regional rate.)
Also within walking distance of the JUMP.
Mostly speeches by people who think that they are leaders. May be the only way to find out what is happening in transportation planning.
For example, it appears that bus routes connecting Lafayette to other cities will be cut to fund a BRT project which will provide worse service than the current BOLT.
There will be some kind of public comment available.

How to get to the polls by bus in Boulder County
Boulder County Clerk and Recorder
1750 - 33rd Street
Boulder
This is where the ballots are actually counted.
Bus: The Jump is closest.
I was unable to figure out how to walk here from the Bound. I assume you have to walk down 33rd Street from Arapahoe. May not be accessible.
Boulder Meadows
4500 19th Street (far north Boulder)
Bus: 20
Hampton Inn & Suites Gunbarrel
6333 Lookout Road
Boulder
Bus: In between stops for the 205 and BOLT
There is one polling location in downtown Boulder and one on the CU Boulder campus in or near the student center. I assume access transit and pedestrian access are the same as always.
Lafayette Public Library

Voting is at the behind the library. Just keep going down the sidewalk until you see the signs.
Bus: 225, LD1/2 (If you are traveling within Lafayette, you can request a local fare on the L D buses.)
There is continuous sidewalk from both stops, but you may need to request the ramp to get off the bus even if you don't always need it.
Superior Town Hall
Bus: 228, Superior CallnRide
Louisville Police & Courthouse
Dropoff box is in the island in the middle of the parking lot. Staff are helpful.
Bus: 228, Louisville CallnRide
Bus stop may not be accessible due to signs in the road.
Louisville CallnRide starts to serve both the above locations after rush hour so service is guaranteed until 7
Nederland Community Center
750 North Highway 72
Bus: N
From satellite view it looks like the stop at Hwy 119 and W Boulder St is most likely to have sidewalks all the way to vote.
I assume that the polling locations in Longmont are NOT handicapped or bus rider accessible as things there are usually not.

Meeting on Quiet Zones along Railways in Niwot and Boulder County
Public Meeting/Open House by Boulder County
Monday, May 14, 6 to 7:30 pm
Niwot High School
8989 Niwot Road
Niwot
Bus: None
Since 2005, train conductors have been required to sound their horns at all railroad crossings, except where quiet zones have been established. Right now Boulder County and the cities of Boulder, Louisville and Lafayette are working to create quiet zones within their borders. The current Boulder County efforts are focusing on the area around the Diagonal Highway. For a map of places where changes may occur, please go to this link: https://www.bouldercounty.org/transportation/plans-and-projects/railroad-crossing-quiet-zones/
The presentation for the meeting is there, but it is a mess.
Most accidents are caused by people trying to drive around the crossing arms which risks running to people on bikes and people walking. People also get their cars stuck, often in the path of the oncoming train. Most people who are hit because they don't hear the horn are people walking or biking while wearing headphones, and these accidents are less common than people racing the train in their cars.
Here is a summary of some of the proposals:
Niwot Road and Main Street
Either a raised median or channelizing devices will be built at both these locations which will eliminate three to six parking spaces. The consultants think that this is very important. They do not care about anyone who walks or rides a bike. They may need to do this because cars have to be able to turn around safely. This is not mentioned until the section on Independence Road.
Monarch Road
No action needed?
North 55th Street
Channelizing devices instead of medians because medians would require rebuilding the area around the tracks which is expensive.
Jay Road
4-quadrant gate because the most people cross here.
Independence Road
This crossing is close to one in the City of Boulder and as such county planners need to coordinate with the city. Also, the road may need to restriped or changed in other ways.
North 83rd Street
Because this crossing is so close to the Diagonal Highway, making it safe is difficult. The turn off of the highway may need to be restructured. CDOT may need to be involved with any changes to this crossing.
If you cannot go to the meeting, you can submit comments at https://bouldercounty.wufoo.com/forms/s1v7b0ie1r0rbc6/

Ride Free in Longmont
Here is the official press release on our new free buses:
Ride Free! Longmont program starts Tuesday, July 1
All local Longmont bus routes are free to ride all year
Boulder County, Colo. – All RTD local bus routes in Longmont will be free for riders of all ages starting Tuesday, July 1.Hop on and off as many times as you want, all day long, through the end of 2014.
No passes, cards or identification of any kind is needed to ride local buses that travel solely within Longmont. Regional routes (BOLT, L, and J) are not included, but riders that access regional routes via a local bus can request a transfer that is good for $2.25 off the regional fare.
Local routes serving Longmont include:
· 323: Skyline Crosstown
· 324: Main Street
· 326: Westside Crosstown
· 327: Eastside Crosstown
More information including route maps and schedule information can be found at www.LongmontBus.com.
Ride Free! Longmont is made possible through a collaboration of the City of Longmont, Boulder County, and the State of Colorado. The six-month cost of the program is estimated at $108,000, which is the fare revenue RTD would have collected over this time from the four routes they provide.
Boulder County obtained a State of Colorado grant that will cover 50 percent of the total cost of the program. The grant is aimed at providing transportation assistance to low-income families. The remaining half of the costs will be split between Boulder County and the city of Longmont. Boulder County’s funding source comes directly from the voter-approved Transit and Trails sales tax that is intended to increase transit ridership in Boulder County.
“This is a great program for Longmont residents and visitors and an opportunity to increase ridership on Longmont buses,” said Boulder County Transportation Multi-Modal Division Manager Scott McCarey. “Transportation costs in low and moderate income families can rival the cost of housing, and RTD surveys show that 62 percent of passengers on the four local Longmont routes have total annual incomes of less than $25,000. A free bus ride each day can save a family a lot of money that can go to other necessities. We see this as a win-win-win program for Boulder County, Longmont, and RTD.”
For more information on the program, visit the Ride Free! Longmont website, or contact Scott McCarey at smccarey@bouldercounty.org or 303-441-3900.

The Hessie Shuttle is Back
UPDATE: The bus now runs to and from Nederland Park-n-Ride, 300 Jackson Street, and Saturday hours have been shortened because their is less daylight in the fall. The last bus runs at 6 pm. Also, buses run every 20 minutes instead of 15 some parts of the day.
Starting this Saturday, June 7 and running until Sunday, October 5, the free Hessie Shuttle runs from Nederland High School to the Hessie Trailhead, an entry point to the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The bus runs every 15 minutes from 8 to 8 on Saturdays and 8 to 6 on Sundays and holidays. To make this a bus only trip, take the N bus from Boulder. Unfortunately, the N is not a free bus although it does take EcoPasses.

Free Boulder-Lyons Shuttle Begins Today
Like last year, Boulder County is financing a free shuttle between Boulder and Lyons. It will run from today, May 23 to Sunday, August 31. It runs evenings Friday and daytime Saturdays and Sunday with a few extra evenings and holidays thrown in. Route Map and Schedule (PDF)
The route is same as the Y which is a regional RTD route that connects Boulder to Lyons during the week.
Also, a reminder. If you are a resident of Lyons, you are eligible for a free bus pass that will let you ride all RTD's buses and light rail lines. The pass is available through Lyons City Hall.

Nederland is looking for people to help manage their EcoPass program
The County of Boulder is looking for five people to be on the Nederland EcoPass Public Improvement District Advisory Committee. It looks like all members must own property within the district. It sounds like this is a new group, as the location and time of meetings will be determined by the group members and the only information on the committee seems to be on the application which is linked above. For more information contact Jared Hall.
Another committee that might have a transit link is the Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness Advisory Board.

Boulder Needs a New RTD Rep for District O
John Tayer has stepped down has the representative for District O. So the the commissioners of Boulder County are looking for a replacement. If you think that could be you, submit a letter of interest and a resume to mkrezek@bouldercounty.org by 4:30 pm on Thursday, January 17. The letter of interest should include professional and volunteer experience working on transit and/or working on projects requiring regional collaboration.
Applicants must live in District O which includes the towns of Nederland, Jamestown, Lyons, Superior, Boulder, Louisville and unincorporated Boulder County west of 95th Street. Applicants must also be available for Board meetings on Tuesdays at 5:30 pm near Market Street Station in downtown Denver.
I am hoping that Boulder County gets a representative that better represents the people who actually take the bus. We need to have someone who supports families, including single mothers and their children. We need someone who at least realizes that not everyone is white. We need someone who knows that Latinos have always lived in Boulder County.

Is the Boulder County Environmental Sustainability Plan Any Good?
I am wondering. Bus service was cut between Boulder and Longmont while the county plans to widen that road. And this is while the City of Boulder is wondering how they are going to pay for the ever increasing costs of fixing the roads they already have. Wouldn't it be a better use of money to put in better bus service?
Anyway, there is a public meeting, again at a time when no one can go. Hopefully, it won't be a waste of time for people to stop by during their lunch breaks.

You can read a PDF of the plan online at http://www.bouldercounty.org/find/library/government/envsustainabilityplan.pdf.
Warning: the plan is pretty much unreadable and is more an ad for Boulder County than an actual plan.

Another Way to Get to Jamestown
The Climb, a shuttle that already serves Gold Hill, is extending its service to Jamestown. This service only runs once from Jamestown to Boulder in the morning and then back in the evening, but it is free for residents of Jamestown until the end of the year. Residents of other cities pay $3.00 for one trip or $25 for 10 tickets.

More on Boulder County's Master Transportation Plan
Last year, I published a couple of posts on the planning process for Boulder County's Master Transportation Plan. Unfortunately, we did not get as much opportunity for public comment as we were promised or would have liked. I am especially disappointed that opportunities for public comment so far have not considered people's work schedules.
That is true of these two upcoming opportunities as well:

Two Meetings on One Night
If you are interested in the future of transit options in Boulder County, there are two meetings that might interest you. Unfortunately, they are both on the same night, this coming Monday.
Plan Boulder County is hosting a forum to discuss whether the area should get rail, BRT, or a combination of the two. Other forms of bus service are not going to be discussed. Karen Benker, both a former RTD board member and a former member of Longmont's city council; Audrey De Barros, executive director of 36 Commuting Solutions; John Tayer, RTD board member, and Will Toor, Boulder County commissioner, will be panelists. The meeting is being held in a restaurant, so eating and drinking are encouraged.
Monday, March 19, 7pm
Shine
2027 13th Street, Boulder
Bus: SKIP
The restaurant is three blocks from the Boulder Transit Center.
There is also going to be a public meeting on the station plan for downtown Longmont. I am concerned that the plan has too much parking and I can't tell where the transit is going to go. I also don't see any walkability improvements. There are summaries of comments on the Longmont City website. Business owners seem to want a circular, and residents are concerned that there will be a "sea of parking".
Monday, March 19 at 6 pm, presentation at 7 pm
Longmont Library, Rooms A & B
409 4th Avenue, Longmont:
Buses: BOLT (Please note that all local buses will have stopped running by this time.)
I wonder if there are any plans to add evening bus service within Longmont so that transit dependent people can actually go to these meetings.
