Get information about BRT between Boulder and Longmont

State Highway 119 BRT Public Meeting
Thursday, December 6, 5:30-7:30 pm (Presentation at 6 pm)
Left Hand Grange
195 2nd Avenue
Niwot
Bus: BOLT (It is a five minute walk from the Niwot ParknRide)

As far as I can tell, this project does not improve bus service, makes providing service between Longmont and Boulder more expensive, and may in fact may be a way to hide a road widening project.

We should be spending our money on improving service between Longmont and Lafayette. Service between those towns is currently inadequate and unreliable, and is facing serious cuts. We also need adequate service in east Boulder County on weekends.

How to access tonight's telephone town hall

Tonight Wednesday, November 14 at 6:30 pm there is going to be a telephone town hall with RTD Board Chair Doug Tisdale and RTD CEO Dave Genova about train construction and upcoming fare increases.

You can join the call by dialing 877-229-8493 and entering 112070. You can call in any time before the end of the call. Usually, these calls last from 45 minutes to an hour. There will be an opportunity to leave a question at the beginning of the call and possibly some time in the middle.

A recording of the call will eventually be added to the RTD website.

How to get to the polls by bus in Boulder County

Boulder County Clerk and Recorder
1750 - 33rd Street
Boulder
This is where the ballots are actually counted.
Bus: The Jump is closest.
I was unable to figure out how to walk here from the Bound. I assume you have to walk down 33rd Street from Arapahoe. May not be accessible.

Boulder Meadows
4500 19th Street (far north Boulder)
Bus: 20

Hampton Inn & Suites Gunbarrel
6333 Lookout Road
Boulder
Bus: In between stops for the 205 and BOLT

There is one polling location in downtown Boulder and one on the CU Boulder campus in or near the student center. I assume access transit and pedestrian access are the same as always.

Lafayette Public Library
Voting is at the behind the library. Just keep going down the sidewalk until you see the signs.
Bus: 225, LD1/2 (If you are traveling within Lafayette, you can request a local fare on the L D buses.)
There is continuous sidewalk from both stops, but you may need to request the ramp to get off the bus even if you don't always need it.

Superior Town Hall
Bus: 228, Superior CallnRide

Louisville Police & Courthouse
Dropoff box is in the island in the middle of the parking lot. Staff are helpful.
Bus: 228, Louisville CallnRide
Bus stop may not be accessible due to signs in the road.

Louisville CallnRide starts to serve both the above locations after rush hour so service is guaranteed until 7

Nederland Community Center
750 North Highway 72
Bus: N
From satellite view it looks like the stop at  Hwy 119 and W Boulder St is most likely to have sidewalks all the way to vote.

I assume that the polling locations in Longmont are NOT handicapped or bus rider accessible as things there are usually not.

RTD Decides on Cuts to Bus Service at October Meeting

Board of Directors Meeting
RTD Administrative Offices, Basement
1660 Blake Street
Denver
Bus: 1, Free Mall Ride

The Board will be deciding on ending bus service between Longmont and Denver and possibly bus service between Longmont and downtown Lafayette at this meeting. Meanwhile, RTD continues to waste money on things that do not improve service.

In particular, RTD continues to spend money on parking even though parking does not increase bus ridership.

Reminder that this involves damaging, and possibly destroying, one of the last Latino neighborhoods in Denver. There is no information from the Department of Public Health and Environment why this is being considered, how this helps people's health.

The Department of Public Health and Environment is accepting written comments through the afternoon of Wednesday, September 5. You can email comments to BEH@Denvergov.org. You can also bring them or mail them to the Department of Public Health and Environment, Administrative Offices, Attention Kathy Houston, 200 W. 14th Avenue, Suite 300. (The 9 and 52 stop is north of these offices.)

RTD wants to raise fares while ridership declines

RTD is hosting public meetings to tell people what they want to do.

The first meeting is telephone town hall so they don't have to actually talk to people.

Thursday, July 12, 7-8 pm
Call 877-229-8493

Look for them to overemphasize the effort that they put into the study while not mentioning that lack of bus riders or lack of people qualified to do this study. Or even the fact that there were only five or six people at most sessions.

I am also concerned that people who asked the legislature not to fund transit may have been part of the group.

Also, I don't expect them to mention that the nonprofit program will not get anymore money, but will be more expensive to administer which means less bus and trains rides for the low income people.

A few days later, open houses start.

Meeting on Quiet Zones along Railways in Niwot and Boulder County

Public Meeting/Open House by Boulder County
Monday, May 14, 6 to 7:30 pm
Niwot High School
8989 Niwot Road
Niwot
Bus: None

Since 2005, train conductors have been required to sound their horns at all railroad crossings, except where quiet zones have been established. Right now Boulder County and the cities of Boulder, Louisville and  Lafayette are working to create quiet zones within their borders. The current Boulder County efforts are focusing on the area around the Diagonal Highway. For a map of places where changes may occur, please go to this link: https://www.bouldercounty.org/transportation/plans-and-projects/railroad-crossing-quiet-zones/

The presentation for the meeting is there, but it is a mess.

Most accidents are caused by people trying to drive around the crossing arms which risks running to people on bikes and people walking. People also get their cars stuck, often in the path of the oncoming train. Most people who are hit because they don't hear the horn are people walking or biking while wearing headphones, and these accidents are less common than people racing the train in their cars.

Here is a summary of some of the proposals:

Niwot Road and Main Street
Either a raised median or channelizing devices will be built at both these locations which will eliminate three to six parking spaces. The consultants think that this is very important. They do not care about anyone who walks or rides a bike. They may need to do this because cars have to be able to turn around safely. This is not mentioned until the section on Independence Road.

Monarch Road
No action needed?

North 55th Street
Channelizing devices instead of medians because medians would require rebuilding the area around the tracks which is expensive.

Jay Road
4-quadrant gate because the most people cross here.

Independence Road
This crossing is close to one in the City of Boulder and as such county planners need to coordinate with the city. Also, the road may need to restriped or changed in other ways.

North 83rd Street
Because this crossing is so close to the Diagonal Highway, making it safe is difficult. The turn off of the highway may need to be restructured. CDOT may need to be involved with any changes to this crossing.

If you cannot go to the meeting, you can submit comments at https://bouldercounty.wufoo.com/forms/s1v7b0ie1r0rbc6/

These would be good meetings to ask about all the bus stop closures although they would rather talk about the G Commuter Rail Line.

We should also remember that the Colorado Legislature cut RTD's funding and the City of Denver wants to get rid of ordinary bus service on major routes and replace it with BRT (stops far apart).
